Meretrio performs its brand-new album and celebrates 20 years as a band with its 11th release!
Formed by Luis Oliveira, Gustavo Boni, and Emiliano Sampaio, the trio blends Brazilian traditions and jazz in a creative and diverse way.

Meretrio stands out as an exceptional Brazilian trio that has been creating imaginative and captivating music for two decades. Over the years, the group has toured extensively, performing in Brazil, Europe, and Australia (twice), including appearances at some of the world’s leading jazz festivals.

The trio has produced ten unique albums, each a testament to the deep musical connection shared by these three Brazilian musicians. Their 11th album celebrates two decades together, featuring original compositions inspired by Afro-Brazilian musical traditions, skillfully combined with elements of chamber music and jazz.

Meretrio’s sound explores rich combinations of drums, percussion, bass, guitar, trombone, and loop machine, pushing the boundaries of what a trio can sonically achieve.

In recent years, Meretrio has embarked on collaborative projects, producing two albums with the renowned flutist and saxophonist Heinrich von Kalnein (of the Jazz Big Band Graz): Live at the Bird’s Eye and Passagem.

In 2021, the group released an album dedicated to Brazilian folk music, with a special focus on the genre Choro — a 19th-century style considered the forerunner of urban Brazilian music. Meretrio’s interpretation earned them a nomination for the German Record Critics’ Award (Preis der Deutschen Schallplattenkritik).

Their 2016 album Óbvio received high praise, earning four stars from DownBeat Magazine. In 2019, the trio released the double album Music for Small and Large Ensembles, and their works have consistently resonated with critics and audiences alike — with DownBeat naming one of their releases among the “Best Albums of 2017.”
